Impact

Veronica Walker Vadillo March 31, 2022

The first time I saw the faces of the Bayon, I was 15 and my mother had bought me a book collection of archaeological sites around the world. I fell in love with Angkor right there and then. I never expected my life to lead me to the wonderful Cambodia, Kingdom of Wonder. Nevertheless, when I had to settle for an M.A. research project, I remembered that book and the faces of the Bayon smiling warmly at me.

When I started writing for National Geographic Historia, I wanted to inspire others into exploring Asia and the water worlds we’ve left behind. I just received this carefully handwritten letter, and the words mean the world to me. Thank you for the message, it really put a smile on my face today. I am glad you enjoyed the article, and I am even more thrilled that my words inspired you to learn more. This is the kind of impact I want to have.

From a very interested reader in Brooklyn:

Dear Veronica Walker, Ph.D.,

Greetings! I read your article in “National Geographic: History” about Angkor Wat, Cambodia. It was very good and I want to learn more.
