About

I am a maritime archaeologist currently based in Helsinki, Finland, where I work as the PI of the Ports and Harbours of Southeast Asia Project. I hold a BA+MA in History (Universidad de Alcala), specialised in Spanish and European History, an MA in Maritime Archaeology from University College London, and a DPhil from the School of Archaeology, University of Oxford. While at Oxford, I was part of the Oxford Centre for Maritime Archaeology and the Oxford Centre for Asian Art, Archaeology, and Culture. The focus of my research was Angkor’s fluvial cultural landscape, you can access my doctoral thesis here.

After defending my thesis, I earned a position at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies, where I studied the role of semi-nomadic fishing communities of the Mekong River in state development during the Angkor era, before moving on to my current research project, which focuses on human-environment entanglements in early modern maritime networks in Southeast Asia.

Apart from my academic inclinations, I am a writer for Historia National Geographic, for whom I have been working as a freelance writer since 2009. As a writer, I am interested in finding novel ways of interacting with the public and bridging the gap between archaeologists and the greater public.
